Introduction

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) uses the Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) program as a standardized monitoring strategy for assessing the condition and trend of natural resources on BLM-managed lands. In 2011, a pilot project was initiated in the National Petroleum Reserve–Alaska (NPR-A) to adapt the AIM strategy to an arctic environment. As part of this project, twelve strata were defined to capture the range of natural variation in biophysical characteristics and site potential across the Arctic Coastal Plain and Brooks Range Foothills. Subsequently, a random stratified selection of sites were sampled across the strata following AIM protocols. Data on indicators, such as vegetation composition, height, and percent cover of bare ground and surface water, among others, were collected from 261 plots from 2012 to 2022. This web application is designed to help land managers visually explore indicators at different scales (physiographic, stratum, plot). Indicators deemed informative to ecological integrity and function can be used to set benchmarks for each stratum that, when exceeded, signal a potential need to initiate a management action. This framework allows land managers to make data-driven decisions to meet management objectives.

Instructions

The sidebar menu provides a set of controls to guide the data exploration. On mobile devices, the sidebar menu will appear at the top of the page: scroll down past the controls to view the outputs. To get started, select the type of data visualization that you would like to explore, then select the output types that you would like to view (e.g., "plots"). You can alternate between multiple types of comparison plots. Note that not all sites will have informative data for all indicators. For example, the "Alpine" physiography will show an empty plot for the "tall shrub %" indicator because tall shrubs do not generally occur in the Alpine within NPR-A. This application links to site photographs through the "data" and "map" views. Click the links in the data table or associated with points in the map to see photos from a particular site. Click the links in the stratum legend to see summary documents for each stratum. The "reset" button at the bottom of the page will return all inputs to their initial defaults.
